A brief History on Renshi Jim Price

I started my Karate training on March 9th 1974.  I was 20 years old when I started.  It seems like only yesterday when I walked into the Pekin Dojo, how time really travels.  Back in the early years I use to call it hard core Karate.  The training was very hard on any individual, both physically and mentally,  how time has changed.  Don’t get me wrong,  Karate is still very hard but if I used the tactics that was used on us, there would not be very many students in my Dojo.

As a Kyu Rank, I loved Competition.  I went to as many competitions that I could go to. It seemed that there was at least one or two tournaments every weekend.  That was the joy of going to Karate tournaments, you had the opportunity to meet a lot of new Karate-Ka from other areas.  I had the great fortune in meeting a lot wonderful people.  In the beginning I competed to test my skills against other great competitors and had a lot of fun doing just that. But as years went by it really didn’t matter whether I won or lost, it was the friendship that I had made with so many different martial artists from everywhere.

I try to tell my students not to worry about winning or losing, for if they have the courage to go to a tournament and compete, they are already winners in my book.  You can be the best champion but it still revolves around the five judges that are on your panel. There is way to much politics in competition now days, especially in Brown and Black Belt Divisions, but what can you do about it.

I am the Chairman of Referees and Rules Committee in the United States Karate-Do Kai  I hold an International and National license for the USKK Organization.  I also hold an International Certificate of Refereeing from the International Federation of Pankration Athlima. I was inducted into the Hall of Fame year 2000. I am a 10 time National Champion in The United States Karate-Do Kai and I retired from point Competition in 1996. I am a life member of the Professional Karate Commission.

I am a life time member of the United States Karate-Do Kai.  Master Phillip W. Koeppel is my teacher and mentor. studying karate for over 30years. I hold the rank of Roku-dan (6th degree black belt) with the title of Renshi and continue to study under the guidance of  Master Phillip W. Koeppel.  I also hold the rank of Go-Dan in Kobudo (Weapons).
